I decided to write this tutorial for a number of reasons but my main reason was to help others new to the program to be able to have a strong understanding of how to use and create terrain entities, and not have to experience the issues and problems allot of us in the past have had to encounter. First off I would like to remind you now that the tutorial your about to read has been written as if I myself were going to be creating an entity for my own map. I can guarantee you if you follow this tutorial you will not have any problems with creating your terrain entity the first time through.

First off if you don’t already have Easygen you can download it as well as the Rgoer Templates bundled together HERE.

Obviously if you have clicked the link above for Easygen then you need to install it first before we can continue with the tutorial, if you do have Easygen installed already then you can skip this install procedure and browse to where you are having difficulties and continue from there. So go and do that now and come back when your ready to proceed . . .

Back so soon? What’s that? I found it kind of confusing too, when in fact its actually quite simple. The easiest way I found to install Easygen is this-browse to
*C:Program Files*. Create a folder there called Easygen-*C:Program FilesEasygen* then once there create another folder named bitmaps-*C:Program FilesEasygenbitmaps*. The next step is to open the Easygen.zip you downloaded earlier and extract all the files inside to the the Easygen folder you just created *C:Program FilesEasygen* if you didn’t get it, I suggest you get it NOW. Once you have extracted that you then need to extract the *Rgoer* templates to the templates directory *C:Program FilesEasygentemplates*. Then you need to add *roger* in lowercase and no quotes to the templatelist.txt file in the templates directory. Once you do that say yes to save changes, close all windows and directories and start up Easygen.

The first time that you open Easygen the program will ask you for the location of two folders on your system, the first will be the path to you JKA
“base” folder, and the second will be for the “bitmaps” folder we created inside the Easygen folder earlier. Once you have these two folders selected click next.

The figure below is what you should now have on your screen in Easygen.

Alright, earlier I had mentioned something called a “height map” you can create your own height map if you really want using either photoshop, corel or a similar editor. Height maps must be either an 8bit or 16bit grayscale bitmap, they cannot be anything else or they wont work. The way that the height maps work within Easygen is - the darker the area the deeper the terrain will be, where as the lighter it is the higher the terrain will be, with white being the highest. I have found in my personal experience that creating a height map to work from in Easygen can, in most cases take just as long to create as it would if you were to just use the modifier within Easygen to tweak the grid in the first place cuz you can achieve the same results by doing so, and I find you can usually be a little more creative this way, sometimes have even better results than you were planning on getting. But Its your project, so you can decided whatever you want to do. If you do want to use a height map to help yourself get a general idea of how things work then you can get the one I created writing this tutorial
HERE
